Baby Days report.

Photo of ante natal class, practicing relaxation techniques. On a particularly hot and sunny day recently, one of our Babys Days Antenatal Sessions took place, in The Poppy Room at  St Cuthbert’s Church, Portsmouth.
The venue lends itself superbly to this type of event offering everything from catering, baby change area and conference facilities including the luxury of air conditioning. Our mums and dads to be, comfortably listened and actively participated in relaxation therapy, massage and even tried their hands at folding real nappies for the first time!

Hosted by the organisers of The Southern Baby and Toddler Show and in association with Baby Scan™ and Water Babies, guest speakers each discussed and demonstrated a variety of topics to the group.

A local midwife provided an interactive discussion on the stages of labour and various types of pain relief available, followed by 15 minute relaxation session with massage and tips on being prepared for parenthood.

Breastfeeding Matters expert Lynn Timms discussed the power of the newborn instincts, the first few days of breastfeeding and the importance of nurturing yourself whilst becoming familiar with your new baby and the parenting role. Lynn also promoted the benefits of baby massage including some strategies for the early weeks and finally some top tips in first aid and child safety.

Photo of mother, carrying her baby in a sling. An inspiring and enthusiastic talk from Karah Benford saw all the parents to be, having a go at wrapping and wearing a sling – hand made by Karah and available at very affordable prices ! Baby Phebe was the perfect model and proved to the group how happy she was to be carried in this way, freeing up mum or dads hands to be able to multi task, no strain on your body, and no need for a pushchair, Brilliant!

Photo of a couple practicing the use of a baby nappy. Nappies were presented by Meg Lampard of Real Nappies whom as a mum herself, experienced first hand the benefits and cost savings of a cloth nappy – they are really funky, colourful and comfortable ranging in differing sizes.

The session came to a close with a DVD showing ‘Water Babies’ and the importance and benefits of teaching your baby to swim at an early age. Portsmouth Water Babies sessions are available at the Royal Maritime Club and Mary Rose School.

Post event evaluations have indicated a very positive response to our Baby Days sessions, some comments are shown below.
